 PROPERTY MARKING

Ultra Violet Marker Pens

Property should be marked on the rear or underside of items, such as TVs, Videos and Cameras, with the postcode and house number in brackets. In cases where there is no house number, the postcode followed by the first two letters of the house name should be used.

This method needs to be repeated approximately every six months as the marks can fade through exposure to sunlight.

To detect this marking, property needs to be scanned with an ultra violet lamp. The postcode will show up as florescent purple.

This is a new method of marking, specifically for jewellery items. Marking can only be done by a Black Dot approved jeweller.

The jewellery is marked by embedding two black dots on the item. A full description and a photograph of the item is taken and the information is kept on two databases - Black Dot and the local jeweller.

The marking is clearly visible to the naked eye.

Enquiries regarding Black Dot should be made to 0121 233 3840.

Tiny microdots, about the size of a pinhead, are individually printed with a unique Personal Identification number (PIN). They are just visible to the naked eye but can only be read with equipment supplied to the police.

They can be applied to virtually any item.

A high visibility-warning label confirms the presence of microdots.

Available through Neighbourhood Watch, the discs cost approx £1.00 each.

Lockable Wheel Nuts

Sheds/Gardens - "Sheducation"

Secure access to your shed or garage by locking gates and using thorny bushes next to walls and fences.

Have you visibly marked the contents of your shed?

External security lights that are movement-activated are a useful deterrent.

Doors of sheds require strong locks and close shackle padlocks. Fit up-and-over doors with a padlock or lockable bolt in addition to the standard lock.

Use coach bolts or non-return screws to secure door hinges.

Cycles mowers ladders and tools should be secured to a strong anchor point.

Alarms for sheds and garages are available for under £20 in DIY stores, catalogue shops and builders merchants.
